The story is a Wild West tale, which Mattie tells us. She explains how a young girl could leave home and go off in the wintertime to avenge her father’s blood. She convinces us she will not return home without finishing her mission: to find her father’s murderer Tom Chaney and bring him to Justice. So she pays the old Marshal Rooster, who has “true grit“, to track down the killer; and then she joins him on the hunt together with the Texas Ranger LaBeouf. Ironically, she winds up killing the murderer herself, losing her innocence and her shooting arm, but she also finds a new father in Rooster, whose body she will one day collect and take home for burial.
